Raymond Arnatt
1934-2004
Ray
Arnatt has focused on the development of his philosophy on art and
life, and on finding new ways to express them in his sculptural
works.
The
idea of "binarism" as a process of spatial arrangements has allowed
Ray Arnatt to make artistic sense out of everyday objects and relationships.
Curated
by Dr. Caterina Pizanias, a sociologist of art and an author of
numerous publications related to contemporary visual culture, this
exhibition will present a comprehensive retrospective look at intriguing
and complex works of this creative and intellectual artist.

Ray
Arnatt: Perfecting the View
A Retrospective Exhibition
"…
The value of an idea is proved by its power to organize the subject
matter …"
Goethe
For
nearly 50 years of his artistic career, Ray Arnatt has focused on
the development of his philosophy on art and life, and on finding
new ways to express them in his sculptural works.
Born
in 1934 in Nuneham Courtenay, Oxon, U.K., Arnatt has demonstrated
his interest in visual arts in the early childhood. From 1951 -
1955 he studied sculpture
at the Oxford School of Art, Oxford, U.K. and, from 1957 - 1961,
continued it at the Royal College of Art in London, from which he
earned a Silver Medal for Sculpture and a First Class Honour Degree.
Since 1965, he has been teaching sculpture at various art institutions
in England and Canada, including: the Chelsea School of Art, Emily
Carr College of Art (now Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design) in
Vancouver, and at the University of Calgary, where he has been lecturing
si nce
1981 and is now a Professor of Sculpture. His work is included in
several private and public collections in U.K., the United States
and Canada, including: the Glenbow and Nickle Arts Museums, and
the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
The
idea of "binarism" as a process of spatial arrangements has allowed
Ray Arnatt to make artistic sense out of everyday objects and relationships.
By endless explorations among the forms, lines, colours, figure/field,
inside/outside of diverse objects, such as a chair given by a friend,
a child's drawing, a May-Day garland, Arnatt has been making art
that pleases the senses while it challenges the intellect.
Curated
by Dr. Caterina Pizanias, a sociologist of art and an author of
numerous publications related to contemporary visual culture, this
exhibition will present a comprehensive retrospective look at intriguing
and complex works of this creative and intellectual artist.
Instead
of looking back to create an artificial coherence, this exhibit
will take a look at "binarism in retrospect" to "un-bind" it from
its acquired transparency. It will be a focus on what Arnatt refers
to as "strange crossings", "accidents" of life, the stuff that both
reaffirms and challenges binarism's mathematical limits.
The
official opening of this retrospective exhibition will be held at
the Triangle Gallery on Thursday, March 13, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. with
Ray Arnatt and Dr. Caterina Pizanias in attendance.
The
Curator's & Artist's Talk by Dr. Caterina Pizanias and Ray Arnatt
will be held at the Triangle Gallery on Saturday, March 15, 2003
at 1:30 p.m. and followed by light refreshments.
