ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS
16th Annual Children's Art Exhibition

Carol Escalante (age 16) - "Buildings" , 2002; mixed mediaThis annual exhibition of children's art is produced in partnership with North Mount Pleasant and Wildflower Arts Centres that are operated by the City of Calgary.

Curated by Aubrey Hallis, Recreation Program Specialist from the North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre, the exhibition showcases works by young artists (age 4 - 15) who were enrolled in the visual arts programmes conducted by professional Calgary-based artists at these two arts centres. The presentation features the works in a variety of media: drawings, paintings, illustration, sculpture, ceramics, paper mache sculptures and multi-media installations. The exhibition promotes and celebrates children's creativity and their artistic talents, and serves as a special event during Calgary International Children Festival.

The official opening of this exhibition will be held at the Gallery on Thursday, May 15, 2003 at 6:00 p.m. with young artists in attendance.

Juror's Statement

Stephanie John (age 9) - "Flicker Bird", 2002, mixed mediaAs we looked at the varying artwork we knew that this was going to be a difficult job. There were just so many great creations! Serendipitously, we were quite in tune with each other as we chose the pieces for this show. This made the selection process very enjoyable.

Credit must be given to the Instructors of the Wildflower and North Mount Pleasant Arts Centres, for they have inspired the children to adeptly produce their best artistic efforts.

Both of us agreed that an artwork can be subtle or "razzle-dazzle" and have its own artistic merit. Repeatedly, we were drawn to expressive, free and loose artworks. Young artists are not Katie Miller (age 12) - "Picasso Girl", 2002; acrylic on paperpreoccupied with "getting it right", and for that, there is much they can teach us older artists. While many artworks focus on youthful subject matter and themes, the selected pieces show a mature understanding of visual elements.

Like the game that inspired our title "Rock, Paper and Scissors" let us be engaged by the playfulness inherent in this show.
