LEST WE FORGET:
Canadian Designers On War

Presented in partnership with The Works Festival Visual Arts Society in Edmonton
Organized in conjunction with the "Footprint / Imprint" 2nd Annual Winter Art Stroll

War has long been the subject of the art and within this genre posters have been important vehicles for communication. Posters are used to arouse public opinion. They reflect changes in attitudes, political trends and social issues. They are advertisements and sources of information. In short, posters are a record of the time. Designers have used their talents to rally both for and against war to create powerful graphic statements. 2005 marked the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and a world which is still witness to armed conflicts.

Lest We Forget: Canadian Designers on War features the responses of 26 prominent Canadian designers to the subjects of war, anti-war and peace: Tivadar Bote (Calgary, AB), Cindy Bouwers (Calgary, AB), Stephen Boychuk (Winnipeg, Man.), Karen Brown (Halifax, N.S.), Carole Charette (Quebec City, P.Q.), David Coates (Vancouver, B.C.), Terry Gallagher (Winnipeg, Man.), Bernard Houde (Quebec City, P.Q.) Ben Kunz (Calgary, AB), Helen Mah (Toronto, Ont.), Rayburn Marasigan (Vancouver, B.C.), May Ann Maruska (Oakville, Ont.), Michael Maynard (Oakville, Ont.), Craig Medwyduk (Winnipeg, Man.), Robert L. Peters (Winnipeg, Man.), Byron Pope (Calgary, AB), Elaine Prodor (Calgary, AB), Lynne Rennie (Calgary, AB), Steven Rosenberg (Winnipeg, Man.), Teak Sato (Calgary, AB), Susan Staniforth (Fenelon Falls, Ont.), Carter Storozynski (New York City, N.Y.), Michael Surtees (Edmonton, AB), Bella Totino (Edmonton, AB), Janine Vangool (Calgary, AB), and Matthew Warburton (Vancouver, B.C.).

This show challenges viewers to think differently and perhaps act differently.
