2008 Alberta Contemporary Photography

Photography begins with curiosity.

Among the concerns raised by photographers in their curiosity are questions like:

  • How does photography affect the way I visually explore the world beyond    my skin?
  • How does photography help me relate to the environment we have impacted through all aspects of our culture?
  • Can photographs create memory?
  • When I photograph an object that is constantly changing, creating a still     image to contemplate, is my relationship to the object transformed in some way?
  • Does the manipulation of the photographic print, alter the content and meaning of the image?
  • Can a photographic portrait pose a question for the viewer that can lead to an engaging narrative?

In an arbitrary way, these are the initiating points for the work of the six “next generation” Alberta photographers we are presenting in this exhibition.

Curiosity was at the core of this exhibition from its beginnings. We were curious about who the next generation of photographic artists were, and what kind of work were they creating. The scope of work could probably encompass more than we could hope to include in one exhibition, so we decided to focus on a broad theme, not surprisingly, posed as a question: How does this work incorporate narrative content?

Here are six different, possible answers presented by Michael Coolidge, Sarah Fuller, Mitch Kern, Linh Ly, Tara Nicholson and Stacey Watson.

20th Anniversary of the Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts

2008 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts, a public art gallery responsible for the presentation of contemporary Canadian visual arts, architecture and design in the context of contemporary international art. To celebrate its 20th Anniversary, the Triangle Gallery has organized a series of innovative and thought provoking exhibitions showcasing various artistic disciplines ranging from studio art through multi-media installations to architecture and design.

The Triangle Gallery kicks off its 2008 exhibition season with an evocative art exhibition, “2008 Alberta Contemporary Photography”.  The exhibition will be featured to the public from January 4 to January 25, 2008.

Curated by Arthur Nishimura and Marc “Hutch” Hutchinson, two eminent Calgary-based conceptual photographers and independent curators, this invitational exhibition re-examines the photographic object in the context of traditional and contemporary photographic practices and discusses a function of the photography in the post-industrial visual culture. Participating photographers include: Michael Coolidge, Sarah Fuller, Mitch Kern, Linh Ly, Tara Nicholson, and Stacey Watson.

The exhibition will be presented in conjunction with “Photomontage/Collage” – 4th Annual Winter Art Stroll, which will take place from Thursday, January 10th to Saturday, January 12th at the participating art venues.
