Arts
Touch 2001
Calgary and Area High School Students Art Exhibition
June 7 - July 2, 2001
ARTS
TOUCH ' 2001
This exhibition
celebrates the artistic accomplishments of Senior High School students
from the Calgary Public and the Calgary Catholic School Districts.
This evocative
presentation of art by the young artists reflects excellence in
art education programs in Calgary and area schools and coincides
with Calgary 2001 National Symposium on Arts Education to be held
at the University of Calgary from July 1 to July 3, 2001.
Art education
programs in high schools encourage students to find visual forms
for their thoughts and feelings. For students, art education provides
visual tools to create meaning. Acquiring proficiency in art requires
learning how to see, interpret and make sense of visual stimuli.
Using a variety of materials and techniques, students gain knowledge
in the use of traditional and contemporary tools, materials and
media.
Art education
is concerned with learning the values that surround the creation
and appreciation of art forms. Art is not merely created, it is
valued as a component of our culture. Values associated with student
art works not only tell us about those who create them, but show
how values have changed over time.
For the
purpose of art education the term artist is equally valid to describe
one who has worked many years in this field or someone who is a
relative beginner. In the schools of Calgary Public and Calgary
Catholic School Boards art education is accessible to all students.
