A Year in My Kitchen

One of my best-ever jobs in journalism – certainly the one I enjoyed the most – was writing a recipe every day for the London Evening Standard. Yes, every day! And what’s more there was an 800-word column on a Saturday. What that got me into was a wonderful sense of the rhythms of the seasons, and because my copy went in each Thursday everything was bang up to date – unlike magazines that are working on Christmas in August and so forth. What is in the garden now? What is in the shops now? What’s good, what’s new?

Rhubarb And Cheesecake 003Perhaps because we now have a flourishing kitchen garden I’m rediscovering how much more of an inspirational way it is to work. So I’m here to tell you that I’m returning to my roots and launching into a brand-new series of recipes exclusively for our brilliant website. So, in essence, what I’m cooking on Monday, you could be cooking on Thursday.

Spanish Pork 230It will incorporate what’s at its peak in our kitchen garden, or what’s in season at the farmers’ market, or what my fishmonger and butcher think is good right now, what we’re cooking at the football club, and what – as passionate food-lovers – we’re continually discovering at home, eating out, on holiday – and then inviting you into our kitchen to share the results.

Food in general is either going through an extremely poncy ‘theatre on a plate’ era, or at the other extreme is offering some pretty yucky, junky stuff. So I’m here, as ever, to plug the middle ground and discover afresh where the cycles of the seasons can lead us to in the kitchen, and I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I know I will.
