"...I am curious to know what more can be made of our Civic Art Collection...I feel like getting to know it better and, by that action, I would know this city, its people and artists better..."

Although people who work for the City see some of these works in their workplace on a regular basis, the general public, by and large, is unfamiliar with the scope, quality and nature of the collection.

Creating a Legacy is an exhibition presenting historically significant two and three-dimensional artworks by eminent Alberta artists. The show pays a well-deserved tribute to the artists who were instrumental in the development of the visual arts in Calgary and those individuals whose vision built a solid framework for the Civic Art Collection for the citizens of Calgary. The legacy of pioneer artists such as Marion and Jim Nicoll, H.B. Hill, Wes Irwin, and Douglas Motter is highlighted by Marilyn Horne, the guest curator of the historic section of this exhibition. It will provide visitors with an understanding and appreciation of the origin of this collection.

The second segment of the exhibition is curated by Lynda Snider and Peter Savage, CAAF Board Members. It presents - amongst other projects - artworks by a younger generation of Alberta artists and their role in shaping the contemporary art scene in Calgary and in Alberta. Recent acquisitions to the collection made by the Calgary Allied Arts Foundation over the past five years are also showcased in this segment. They reflect the continued growth of the Civic Art Collection and mirror a diversity of artistic trends and stylistic approaches characteristic of Alberta's visual arts scene.

The Calgary Allied Arts Foundation (CAAF) has a long and distinguished history in the Calgary visual arts community. In partnership with The City of Calgary, the Calgary Allied Arts Foundation promotes the city as a leading visual arts centre, manages and exhibits the Civic Art Collection, advises City Council on visual art matters, and serves as an advocate for the visual arts.
