Documentary
photographers have always sought out people and places with important
true stories to tell. They seem to need those stories that provoke
a sense of wonder, stories that might help them to learn courage
and compassion, stories that will affirm and connect them to life.
My
photography is about looking back at what formed me: the people,
the towns and the landscape of the west. I am continually seeking
to touch and understand the traditions and spirituality of this
place.
The
photographer has to find a balance point between the subject he
is photographing and his own sensibilities. He should recognize
an aspect of himself in what he is photographing.
He
must learn to love and serve truth as he understands it, yielding
neither to cynicism nor sentimentality. He must recognize the light.
