Organised

Paper
+ Finland = Art presents works by eighteen internationally
acclaimed Finnish artists working with paper as their medium.
This exhibition celebrates the diversity of paper as an artistic
medium and its growing importance as an art form. The featured
works, all made in the 1990's range from the delicate intimacy
of paper jewelry to the forceful impact of imposing sculpture.
The
exhibition unites eighteen artists who have come from a variety
of backgrounds: the graphic arts, painting, sculpture, ceramics,
textile design, and interior design. Each artist has brought
his or her own sensibility to this medium, together with a
desire to explore the unique qualities and potential of paper.
Each one has played an important role in placing paper in
the vocabulary of Finnish artistic expression.
The
exhibition presents the works by: Soili Arha, Leenakaisu
Hattunen, Eija Isojarvi, Eeva-Liisa Isomaa, Kaarina Kaikkonen,
Paivikki Kallio, Barbro Kulvik, Harri Leppanen, Jukka Makela,
Miika Nyyssonen, Ritva Puotila, Irina Patt, Anneli Sainio,
Kai Rentola, Janna Syvanoja, Senja Vellonen, Karin Widnas,
and Merja Winqvist.
The
art works in this exhibition range from handmade paper pulp
containing cotton, flax, and other natural substances to industrially
produced and recycled papers. Usually considered fragile,
paper, in the creative hands of the artists of Paper + Finland
= Art, demonstrates visual and conceptual strength.
