About the Triangle Gallery’s Exhibition Program: Multi-Disciplinary Approach and Inclusive Curatorial Methodology
Our intent in the programming of this public art gallery is to actively participate in the development and implementation of professionally-presented, multi-disciplinary programs that explore fresh visual and conceptual parameters, and define our unique niche in Calgary’s visual/design community, and the community at large. The exhibitions in 2011-2012 season contain both modern and contemporary work, including works by our future creators (annual Exhibition of Children’s Art held at the Gallery in May). They not only provide the public with a balanced program of various artistic disciplines, i.e., studio art (painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking), photography, ceramics, multi-media installations, architecture, design, and applied arts, but also offer educational opportunities relative to the history of contemporary international and Canadian visual culture.  The main focus of the 2011-2012 exhibition program will be on excellence in contemporary Calgary’s, Western Canadian and national visual arts, architecture, design, and applied arts, and on continued partnership with national and international visual artists, designers and visual arts institutions. In general, the exhibition program for the entire period 2011-2012 focuses on the development of scholarly researched, innovative, and thought-provoking exhibitions, in addition to publication/educational/audience development/outreach programs presenting and discussing critical issues related to contemporary visual arts and design.

The exhibition program is developed by the Triangle Gallery Artistic Director in close collaboration with Managing Director/Associate Curator working together to develop professional exhibitions that cover the expansive range of the Gallery mandate and to appeal to a wide range of audiences. Each year we welcome several guest curators, allowing us to engage the greater artistic community and leverage expertise that is beyond the Gallery’s professional staff.

Calgary Modern: Contemporary Art from Calgary Collections  (Lower Gallery)
Connections with Collections Series

Calgary Modern presents outstanding works of post World War II art by renowned European, American and Canadian artists drawn from private and corporate collections in Calgary. This period of incredible artistic inventiveness ushered in a rapid succession of art movements: Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, Pop Art, New Image and Post-Modernism. Curated by Jeffrey Spalding, Triangle Gallery Artistic Director, this exhibition showcases a selection of distinguished examples of these international tendencies that are rarely on public view in Western Canada. It reflects the contributions made by a number of international, Calgary and Canadian artists. Highlights include the works by Henry Moore, Jules Olitski, John Chamberlain, Oscar Cahén, Toni Onley, Christian Eckart, and Eric Fischl, among others.

The Triangle Gallery’s presentation focuses primarily upon the evolution of abstraction and is designed to complement a broader presentation of styles concurrently on view at the Art Gallery of Calgary (exhibition Calgary Collects).

Official opening: Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 7 pm

Prairie Excellence: Contemporary Fine Craft in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba

Jointly curated by Helen Delacretaz (Winnipeg), Mary-Beth Laviolette (Calgary/Canmore) and Karen Schoonover (Regina), this exhibition is a unique and ground-breaking collaborative project of the Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta Craft Councils. The exhibition showcases a major overview of new trends and directions in applied arts, fine craft, and design in those three Prairie Provinces. The works in the exhibition demonstrate a major shift from a pure functional and domestic character of the works to conceptual and experimental investigations of form and structure. While various traditions of craftsmanship are still apparent, many works in this exhibition push well beyond the conventions, shifting toward more experimental uses of materials and techniques, and even forms. The exhibition offers an opportunity for a closer analysis and examinations of Scandinavian/”Nordic” influences in a form and design on the Prairies, especially vis a vis contemporary craft and design objects from Norway, presented in September’s exhibition in the Triangle Gallery.

Counterpoint in Black and White: The Photography of Arthur Nishimura and Craig Richards
Presented for “Exposure 2012” – International Festival of Contemporary Photography

Curated by Monique Westra, an art historian, writer, lecturer and independent curator, this exhibition juxtaposes the work of senior Alberta-based photographers Craig Richards and Arthur Nishimura. Its organizational strategy is based on the idea of counterpoint, a musical notion that refers not only to harmony but also to contrast. This concept that serves as an apt metaphor to compare the works of these two senior artists in order to underscore the unique vision of each. Both artists maintain a darkroom practice in black and white photography in a digital age. They have long and distinguished careers, recognised for a distinct body of work. Craig Richards is best known for his epic and dramatic photographs of the Rockies and Arthur Nishimura for his original and idiosyncratic expression. Yet the range of both artists is much broader, including diverse portfolios, approaches and subjects that may surprise viewers. Their oeuvre reflects not only their devotion to their Alberta home but also their fascination with lands and peoples abroad.
