Post-Modernist Glass of Finland

The
Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts features two evocative exhibitions
of contemporary glass and ceramics from Finland.
Fragile
But Strong (lower gallery) features the most recent works
in glass and ceramics by Brita Flander and Elina Sorainen, two leading
Finnish artists and designers. Flander and Sorainen are renowned
both at home and abroad for the beauty and subtlety of their work.
Glass-Art-Function
(upper gallery), organized in partnership with Calgary-based KIT
Gallery, presents works
in glass by eminent post-modernist Finnish artists and designers:
Alvar Aalto, Kaj Franck, Timo Sarpaneva, Tapio Wirkkala and by two
artists representing a younger generation of Finnish designers:
Harri Koskinen and Markku Salo. The show pays a well-deserved tribute
for their contributions to international art and design. These objects
have become classics of Finnish design and carry with them a sense
of context, thus helping to define the design in terms of form and
function. This process can be seen as one of the tenets of the new
humanism that has guided the efforts of twentieth century design
in which Finland has played a major role.
