GLASS
- ART - FUNCTION
POST-MODERNIST GLASS OF FINLAND
HARRI
KOSKINEN (b.1970)
Harri
Koskinen, a young Finnish glass designer, is interested in the contradictory
aspects of glass: on the one hand its lightweight qualities - as
in the Atlas candleholder - on the other its heavy mass and structure
- as in the Klubi glassware. Yet his design work is based not on
abstract influences but more on concrete matters, such as an object's
purpose and the opportunities offered by different manufacturing
techniques. Koskinen has also used glass in an interesting way in
the design of light fittings.
ATLAS
CANDLEHOLDERS (1996)
Harri
Koskinen's Atlas is a modern, 1990s' view of a candleholder. The
rounded, smooth forms harmonize exceptionally well with the candles.
And, like candles, Atlas offers a multitude of colour variations
to create different moods.
