WORTH
A THOUSAND WORDS:
CONTEMPORARY ALBERTA ILLUSTRATORS
Organized for 2002 Artwalk/ArtCity Festival
September
19, 2002 to October 26, 2002
A
picture is worth a thousand words. The job of the illustrator is
to put visual form to words and ideas. What sets the illustrator
apart from the fine artist is that the illustrator's work is created
to complement or enhance expression in another medium whereas the
fine artist sets his/her own problems and parameters. An illustrator's
work may be found in books, magazines, annual reports, comics, on
posters and how-to
diagrams. The types of jobs vary as much as the styles of expression
and media. In a fast-paced, synthetic world, illustration is a reminder
of the individual and the power of the human mind to create.
Curated
by Alison Miyauchi, a visual artist, a historian of contemporary
design and instructor at the Alberta College of Art & Design, this
exhibition showcases the work by ten internationally renowned Alberta
illustrators, including: Rick Sealock, Carolyn Fisher, Karl Geist
and Charles Bell, to name just a few.
Sealock,
a graduate from the Alberta College of Art & Design in Calgary,
has received numerous prestigious awards for his work. His client
list includes Coca-Cola, The Los Angeles Times Magazine, Oxford
University Press and Sony Music.
Fisher,
after several years of illustrating in New York City, returned to
Alberta in 1997. She has been commissioned by well-known clients
from Disney to Time Magazine. Fisher's original art has been exhibited
in Florida, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Geist,
a graduate of both the Alberta College of Art & Design and the University
of Victoria, is well known for his highly detailed images of fish.
He has done work for Outdoor Canada, Parks Canada, and the Alberta
Government.
Bell,
originally an architect, has been commissioned by clients, such
as Time Inc., Business Week and PetroCanada.
