Indian Tribal Arts

Jivya Soma Mashe, Warli tribe's celebration of Diwali, 1985, Rice paste on paper. For thousands of years, the arts and crafts of India have followed traditions of manufacture and use in isolated tribal communities. This exhibition of contemporary master artists in the Indian arts tradition highlights a long tradition and evolution into contemporary art practices. Individual masters within numerous varied art practices are focused on and shown within their tradition as well as surpassing and adding to their tradition in an international context.

Dr. Norman Sjoman, guest curator, is a specialist in Sanskrit and Asian languages, and a practising artist. He has lived in India for 30 years and has carried on a sustained dialogue with Indian artists. He has published articles on both Western and Indian art.
