Between
Tradition, Spiritualism
and Post-Modernism
"Sound
of Nature" - the first major exhibition of contemporary
South Korean art to be held in Canada - showcases a wide panorama
of major artistic trends in contemporary art of South Korea
thorough the most recent works by twenty-six leading avant-garde
artists invited for this exhibition. This wide gamut of stylistic
approaches, schools, trends and artistic currents reflects
various paths South Korean art has taken since the late 1940s,
ranging from the influences of European abstract expressionism,
post painterly abstraction, through minimalism and spiritualism
(elements of Taoist philosophy) to revival of the "traditional
school" of Korean art and to a strong presence of neo-geometry
in abstract art of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
This
exhibition demonstrates how Korean contemporary art has evolved
into various forms that integrate influences of Western art
while maintaining aspects of Korea's traditional spirit. The
issues raised by the works of these artists are diverse, but
united by the dialogue between the Oriental and Occidental
philosophies. The works by South Korean artists cross geographic
and linguistic boundaries and become a part of the universal
language of art, indeed a unique contribution to global culture.
